Halyna Rys is a writer with four published books for children and youth. Halyna was born in Ukraine.She studied book illustration and literature. For the last 6 years, she has been living in Australia, where she completed a PhD in children’s literature at the University of Tasmania. She is very passionate about children’s literature, and promoting diversity. In her creative fiction, she aims to create bridges between cultures, and strengthen common grounds for mutual understanding.
Halyna’s Ukranian background fuels her passion. “Since February 2022,more than 5 million Ukrainian citizens became refugees,” she says. “The majority of them are children and women. Some of them immigrated to Australia. Therefore, there is a need for building an intercultural understanding between Australian and Ukrainian children.” She dreams of creating a picturebook to help build that understanding through children’s stories and illustration.
